How To Replace The Wick In A Brass Oil Lamp

When your lamp is having a hard time staying lit, you are going to want to take the time to replace the wick. Replacing the wick can keep you from having to replace the entire lamp, breathing new life into the lamp and give you quite a few more hours of soft lighting in your home.

Step #1) Cool Off The Lamp – Before you start doing any work on the lamp, you are going to want to make sure that you have given it ample time to cool down. If you do not do this, you run the risk of creating severe burns on your fingers. The lamps can get so hot when they are running that you may not be able to tell you are burning yourself until it is too late. Save your fingers, and give it time to cool off.

Step #2) Unscrew The Burner – Once the lamp has cooled down, you will want to unscrew the burner assembly. Take the glass housing off, if there is one, to expose the burner. Now you can undo the thumb screws that apply pressure onto the housing and keep the burner in place. The burner should come free once these screws are turned counter clockwise.

Step #3) Remove The Wick – After you have the burner out and in your hands, you can begin removing the wick. To do this, you turn the screw that normally exposes more of the wick to burn and pull on the wick with your fore finger and thumb at the same time. By doing this, you will be pulling the wick through the counter screw that holds it in place, allowing you to install the new wick.

Step #4) Install The New Wick – Now, in reverse order of what you have used to remove the wick, you are going to want to use to install the new wick. Begin by feeding the new wick down into the counter screw, and start turning the thumb screw until it grabs onto the new wick. From here you can simple keep turning it until there is a slight portion of the new wick showing on top of the burner assembly. Reassemble the lamp, and insert new burning oil to begin enjoying it again.
